What OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard requires

Under 29 CFR 1910.1200, employers with hazardous chemicals in the workplace need a written hazard communication program, a list of hazardous chemicals, Safety Data Sheets employees can reach on every shift, proper labels, and training. Hazard communication is regularly among OSHA's most-cited standards.

The mixing rule every Florida facility should post

Never mix bleach with ammonia-based cleaners or acid bowl cleaners. The fumes can injure staff in a closed restroom. Keep these products on separate shelves and train staff on it.

Restaurants and food plants

Food-contact sanitizers must be used at label concentration and checked with test strips. See our food plant sanitation response resources for Listeria, Salmonella, and allergen cross-contact.

FAQ

Common questions

Does an office need an SDS binder?
If employees can be exposed to hazardous chemicals under normal working conditions, OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard requires a written program, a chemical inventory, Safety Data Sheets that are readily accessible, labels, and training. Consumer products used the way a consumer would are exempt.
Can SDS sheets be digital?
Yes, as long as every employee can get to them immediately on every shift without barriers, and there is a backup if the device or network goes down.
How often must an eyewash station be checked?
ANSI Z358.1 calls for plumbed eyewash stations to be activated weekly to flush the line and confirm they work, and inspected fully once a year.
Who is responsible for my cleaning company's chemicals?
Your contractor must give you SDS sheets for chemicals they bring onto your site. We provide a complete SDS set and labels for every product we use in your building.
